They enforce the laws of the vampire world. They "invite" other vampires with powerful gifts to join their coven. They are the largest, and most powerful Coven of vampires in the series. They protect the world of vampires by keeping their existence a secret from humans. The Volturi deal swiftly with anything they consider a threat to their Coven or to the vampire world.
